It takes one thread — one question, one situation, one knot you cannot untie — and shows you three moments along it. That narrowness is the point: a small spread asked precisely will tell you more than a large spread asked vaguely.
Read it as a sentence rather than three separate words. The first card is not merely 'the past'; it is the root that the second card grew from. The third is not a fixed prophecy; it is where the current is running if nothing turns it. Tarot in this tradition does not tell you what will happen. It shows you what is already in motion, clearly enough that you can decide whether to let it continue.

What if I don't like what I draw?
No card in the deck is a punishment. The ones that unsettle people — the Tower, Death, the Ten of Swords — are almost always about endings that were already underway. The reading names them so they can stop being ambient dread and become something you can act on.
